Science at Callerton Academy: Year 9 have begun their GCSE Science journey, starting with Cell Biology! Students have been learning about the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, before getting hands-on with microscopes to explore cells for themselves. They prepared their own slides of onion cells and cheek cells, using stains to make key structures easier to see under the microscope and comparing the features of plant and animal cells. Extra-Curricular at Callerton Academy: Callerton's Orchestra returns on Wednesday 23rd September! This year, we're excited to be working with Orchestras for All once again, giving our students the fantastic opportunity to perform at The Glasshouse! We have lots of fabulous new music to learn and can't wait to get started. Orchestra is open to students who already have some experience playing an instrument, from beginner level upwards. Extra-Curricular at Callerton Academy: Our boys headed over to Jesmond Park Academy for their first KS4 basketball tournament of the year a great afternoon of competitive games, teamwork and a chance to get the new season underway! Basketball training takes place every Thursday after school, and we're looking for more students to join our KS3 and KS4 teams. We'd especially love to see more girls getting involved and representing Callerton on the court! Interested in joining the team? From the SEND Department at Callerton Academy: We would like to share information about Young People's Mental Health Safe Haven at Nook, provided by Everyturn Mental Health and Children North East. The service offers free and confidential drop-in mental health support for young people aged 13–17, or 18 if still in full-time education. Support can help young people understand themselves, manage thoughts, feelings and friendships, grow in confidence, and feel more in control. Support is available at Nook Newcastle, Monday–Thursday from 4pm–8pm, and Nook Gateshead, Friday–Sunday from 4pm–8pm. Phone and online appointments are also available for those who need them. Music at Callerton Academy: Instrumental lessons are available for students who would like to develop their musical skills or learn an instrument at Callerton Academy. Lessons are available in violin, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, voice, flute, clarinet and alto saxophone, delivered in partnership with Newcastle Music Service.
